Shell Oil Company does analysis of deep water drilling platform using Microsoft® Excel.
How deep is your data ?
Shell Oil Company created what was the world’s largest deep water drilling platform. A team of engineers responsible for ensuring the quality of component design and production maintained extensive records from regular inspections. In fact, there was so much data collected that analyzing all that information emerged as a real challenge. It simply grew to be what you might consider “info glut” – having so much data that it becomes difficult to derive meaning from it.
Beyond Technology worked with Shell Oil Company to help turn their raw data into meaningful information. You’ve heard the old saying that “a picture is worth a thousand words” – the entire solution was created with that one idea in mind. Completely within Microsoft® Excel , we designed a user interface that actually looked like a birdseye view of the platform.
Engineers were able to click on whatever area of the platform they wanted to analyze. Then we used Microsoft’s familiar “wizard-style” dialogs, along with Microsoft® Visual Basic for Applications [ VBA ] , to walk the user through choosing how they wanted to view data related to individual components of the structure. The software would then create a graphical depiction of all the data associated with the user’s choices. It was fast and efficient, enabling their engineering staff to conduct dozens of analyses and study the relationships of thousands of variables in only seconds. This saved the valuable time of their engineering staff, provided a highly effective tool for ongoing analysis, and put vast amounts of usable information literally at their fingertips.
With custom developed business solutions, you’ll be able to do terrific new things like quickly analyzing massive quantities of your own data – at any level of detail and from any perspective. You don’t need to be baffled by meaningless data piled high on your desk. This is when having the right people on the team can become a powerful partnership for YOU.
